Herbert Joseph Hastings, 90, of Sandborn, Indiana, went peacefully to Heaven on Sunday, February 5, 2017 at Washington, Indiana. He was born on March 31, 1926 in Sandborn, Indiana to Hugh G. and Thelma M. (Troup) Hastings. He married Betty R. Stites on November 18, 1983.

Herb lived and worked in Knox County for the majority of his life. A few years were spent in Ohio and Arizona, where he worked in sales. Herb was the Bicknell Water Superintendent for many years and well as and for various other local towns. He loved working and continued to do so until he was 80 years old. Herb served in World War II where he started out in an Infantry Division. One day after raising his hand that he could type, he was reassigned to the Signal Corp Division and stationed in Luzon, Philippines where he became a Sergeant. After the Allied victory, Herb was transferred to the CID in Kyoto, Japan, where he finished out his service. He was a member of the American Legion, The Veterans of Foreign War, the Sandborn Christian Church, the Indiana Board of Drinking Water Commission and the Sandborn High School Class of 1944. Herb loved his family and neighbors and enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include: one son, Michael (Donna) Hastings of Bicknell; two daughters, Marla Owen of Jasonville and Patricia (Russell) Perkins of Sandborn; grandchildren, Karen (Eric) Krockenberger of Terre Haute, Bill (Jenny) Owen of Jasonville, Michelle (Mark) Huff of Elnora, Myra (Robert) Koonce of Odon, Quentin (Kaylee) Hastings of Loogootee, Tim Perkins of Vincennes and Eric Perkins of Bicknell; seventeen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Larry (Susan) Hastings of Owensboro, KY; three sisters, Margaret (Bud) Moyer of Indianapolis, Virginia Pollert of New Whiteland and Caroline Gaither of Sandborn; several nieces and nephews.

Herb was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife of 34 years, Mabel Sims Hastings; his wife of 16 years, Betty R. Hastings; granddaughter, Touvia Owen Ammerman; brothers, Vernon and James ‘Jim’ Hastings; twin sisters, Martha and Marie Hastings.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 AM on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel in Linton with rev. Tom Anderson officiating. Herb will be laid to rest in Sandborn Cemetery following military graveside rites.

Family and friends may call from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, February 8 and from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 10:30 AM on Thursday at the funeral home.  

The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Sandborn Park. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
