Avalean G. Mercier, 92, of Linton, IN, passed from this life on Saturday, February 13, 2016, at her home. She was born on October 3, 1923, in Harriman, TN, to Luther R. and Mary Elizabeth (Fitzgerald) Mayton. Avalean was a Rosie the Rivetor during WWII and there she met Henry J. Mercier, who she married on July 26, 1943.
Avalean was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cumberland Homestead, Crossville, TN, and a friend of the Providence Baptist Church of Linton. She worked at the General Electric Plant in Linton for 31 years and retired in 1984. In her free time, Avalean enjoyed phone conversations and visiting with friends. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother.
Survivors include: two daughters, Carolyn A. (Dallas) Benham of Lyons and Mary E. (John) Carmichael of Carlisle; three grandchildren: Aaron Jon (Kim) Benham, Dr. Becky Jolene (Brett Griffith) Carmichael and Sabrina B. (Shannon) Lindsey; a great-grandson, Keller; a brother, Wm. Taylor Mayton of Sommerset, KY; two brother-in-laws: George E. (Lu) Mercier and Ray Carey; a special friend, Liz Johnson of Jasonville; and her devoted caregivers: JoAnne Swaby, Tammy Thompson, Nellie Jones and Ellen Dickinson. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Family members who precede in death are: her parents, her husband (July 7, 2010), two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February17, 2016, at the Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel in Linton with Pastor Darren McDonald officiating. Avalean will be laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery.
Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, and from 9:00 AM until the hour of service on Wednesday.
