Elizabeth A. Gates, 86, of Newburgh, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana. She was born in Mt. Vernon, Indiana on August 12, 1931 to Earl and Una Belle (Duckworth) Hames. She married Hubert Gates on December 20, 1951.

Elizabeth worked at Crane Naval Base and then for US Customs in Indianapolis before retiring in 1991.

Survivors include: two daughters, Brenda Gates of Indianapolis and Susan L. (James) Evans of Bruceville; five grandchildren, Sean Kersey, Robert Kersey, Michael (Sydney) Kersey, Leslie (Brian) Schmelz and Lisa (Matthew) Herrmann; four great-grandchildren, Evan Schmelz, Connor Schmelz, Courtney Van and Madelyn Kersey; one sister, Judy Hames of Indianapolis.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Hubert Gates.

The family is honoring Elizabeth's wishes with Cremation and no public viewing or services.
