James L. Shields, 85, of Linton, IN, passed away Friday, September 14, 2007, at Greene County General Hospital in Linton. He was born in Clay City, IN, on May 12, 1922, to Levi E. and Rebecca Anna (Starret) Shields. On November 30, 1946, he married Wilma E. "Jean" Rhodes.
Jim was a veteran of the US Army who served during WWII. During his military career he was the recipient of five Combat Awards which include four Bronze Stars and one of the 38th Division "Avengers of Bataan." He later worked at the Crane Navel Base for 26 years, retiring in 1972. In addition, Jim, along with his wife, Jean, opened the Shield's Ace Hardware Store in 1968 and served as the President of the business until 1997. Jim held several electronic circuitry patents. Memberships include VFW Post #7118 and the Frank Courtney American Legion Post #22.
Survivors include his wife (of 60 years), Jean Shields, son, Fred A. (Mary) Shields, daughter, Janette E. (Bob) Evans, son, James D. (Denise) Shields, all of Linton, and grandson, Levi (Tina) Shields of Bloomfield, IN.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and 13 brothers and sisters.
The family has requested memorial contributions be made to the 38th Division Association "The Avengers of Bataan", 3912 W. Minnesota St. Indianapolis, IN 46241-4064.
Friends may call at Anderson-Poindexter Funeral Home from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, Sunday, September 16, 2007, and from 9:00 AM until the hour of service on Monday. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, September 17, 2007, with Rev. Hilary Vieck officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Linton with full Military Graveside Rites.
