John N. Powell, 93, of Lyons, IN and formerly of Linton, passed away on Monday, September 16, 2013 at the Lyons Health and Living Center surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Linton, Indiana on January 9, 1920 to Otto 'Dutch' and Norma (Tincher) Powell. He married Betty L. Herndon on December 9, 1944.
John was a WWII US Army Veteran and was awarded 2 Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He retired in 1963 from Crane as a Quality Control Supervisor. John was a Lifetime member of the Linton Moose, Pilgrim of Moose, American Legion and VFW, member of the FOP and 50 year member of the Linton Masonic Lodge 560 F & AM and was a retired Pro-Bowler and retired Radio Dispatcher for the Linton Police Department.
Survivors include: one son, Larry D. (Sharon) Powell of Princeton; one daughter, Carman T. (James) Edmonson of Chandler; close family friend, Betty Taylor; grandchildren, Wilma, Beth, Jami and Deana; 8 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Powell; grandson, Holly Jackson and brother, Ed Powell.
The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Lyons Health and Living Center. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel in Linton with Rev. Dick Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery with full military honors provided by the American Legion Post #22.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 18 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM and from 9:00 AM until the hour of service on Thursday. A Pilgrim of Moose Ceremony will be held at 7:00 PM on Wednesday.
