IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marjorie May
Hyslop
December 12, 1915 – May 23, 2015
Marjorie May Hyslop, 100, of San Jose, California, passed away peacefully in her sleep in Fairfield, California on May 23, 2015. She was born on December 12, 1915 in Linton, Indiana to Marvin and Leva (West) Johnson. She was raised on their farm, and attended the University of Indiana, Terre Haute. Marjorie moved to Mobile, Alabama where she met her future husband, William A. (Art) Hyslop, a dashing young commercial pilot who soon joined the Army Air Corp. They were married in March 1942.
Marjorie was the first wife to arrive at Elmendorf, Alaska where her husband, Art was stationed. She welcomed and assisted other wives who followed and formed the first Wives Club there. Art's 28 year military career took them and their two children around the world, including places like England, the Pentagon and the Philippines before they settled in San Jose, California in 1968 and then moved to a retirement community in Fairfield, California in 1997.
Marjorie was the quintessential military wife and mother, always ensuring a beautiful, warm, and loving home for her family wherever they lived. She was an excellent cook who loved to host family and friends for every occasion. Her heart and her door were always open. She also took up golf, Art's passion. In 1980, Marjorie received her Certificate in Gerontology from San Jose State University and worked as secretary and medical transcriber at the Institute for Medical Research. Through this program, she also became an advocate for several elderly homebound residents.
Marjorie will be remembered for her dedication to her family as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, her quick smile, and her very positive outlook on life. She is survived by: son, Andrew Hyslop; daughter, Hillary Brookshire; grandson, Kenneth Brookshire, all of San Jose, and many great-nieces and nephews scattered throughout California and the Mid-West.
Marjorie was preceded in death by: her husband of 60 years, Art Hyslop; her parents; sisters, Kathryn, Rosemary, and Pearl.
A private memorial service is scheduled for September in Fairview Cemetery in Linton, Indiana.
