Martha Charlotte (Schroeder) Menke, 91, joined the Lord's choir of Heavenly angels March 20, 2011. She passed into Eternal Life at 1:45pm at the Glenburn Nursing Home in Linton, IN. Martha entered this world December 7, 1919, daughter of Walter H. and Anna C. (Stein) Schroeder. She graduated from Sandborn High School in 1937 and married Malcolm W. Menke February 21, 1941. They lived in Indianapolis and Mooresville before moving to Westphalia to be closer to family.
Martha dedicated her life to helping others and always had a smile and words of encouragement for all. She loved music and was a talented musician. Martha sang in the church choir, played the organ and piano, and gave piano lessons for many years. She was devoted to her church and family. She enjoyed homemaking, reading, quilting, and gardening. She was affectionately known by her many friends and family as "Mart".
Martha was a member of Salem United Church of Christ in Westphalia where she actively participated in the Women's Fellowship and taught Sunday School for many years. She was an active member of the Westphalia Study Club and helped in many civic projects.
She was preceded in death by her husband who passed away June 30, 1993; also by her brothers and sisters-in-law Roscoe and Hilda (Grabbe) Schroeder, Earl and Edna (Campbell) Schroeder and two nephews.
Surviving are daughter Marsha A. Kelley and husband J. Michael of Linton; grandson J. Merrick Kelley and wife Lisa and great grandchildren Reid and Carley Kelley of Spring, Texas. Also surviving are son Joe W. Menke and wife Lorie of Loveland, Colorado and their daughter Kaseen Buchholz. Two nieces and three nephews also survive.
Viewing will be Thursday, March 24, at Salem United Church of Christ in Westphalia from 10:00 am until the time of service at 1:30 pm. Pastors Bill Pieper and Mike Roth will officiate. Interment will follow the service in the Westphalia Salem United Church of Christ Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Salem United Church of Christ Memorial Fund.
The Menke family has entrusted Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel in Linton, IN with all funeral arrangements.
