Obituary

Orvel Lee Stremming, 95, of Sandborn, Indiana, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, on Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016 at Odon, Indiana. He was born on August 30th, 1920 in Knox County, Indiana to Edward Henry 'Duke' and Pearl A. (Hagemeier) Stremming. Orvel married his loving wife of 70 years, Virginia Mae (Clifford) Stremming on November 24th, 1945.


Orvel was a T5 Technical Corporal in the 826th Aviation Engineer Battalion in the US Army, helping in the invasion of Normandy. He was very proud to have served his country in WWII, spending 39 months and 21 days overseas in ETO. During his military career, Orvel was awarded a Good Conduct Ribbon, Good Driver's Medal, Marksman's Medal, EAME Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Stars, four Battle Stars, and a Citation of Bravery, signed by the President before receiving an Honorable Discharge. Orvel was a member of the Parkview Christian Church in Plainville, Terre Haute York Rite, VFW, American Legion Post #22, Sheriff's Association, and was a fifty-year member of the Newberry Eastern Star, Switz City Masonic Lodge and Terre Haute Scottish Rite. He began working on a farm at the age of eleven and later worked alongside his wife on his own farm, where they also built their own home. Orvel retired in December of 1982 from General Electric in Linton after 30 years of service and he served on the Ellis Water Board for 20 years. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and especially spending time with God, his wife and family.


Survivors include: his wife, Virginia Stremming; two daughters, Charlene Stremming of Sandborn and Marlene (Robert) Mattingly of Washington; daughter-in-law, Linda Stremming of Texas; four grandchildren, Iris (Danny) Overman of Bloomfield, Ilene Casner and Lee Stremming of Linton, Ginny (Bill) Gayso of Texas; 9 great-grandchildren, Michael L. and Brayden Stremming, LeeAnna Harris, Lindsay (Jesse)  Bobo, Daniel Casner, Dylan Cunningham, Eric and Blaine Gayso, and Katelin Norris; three great-great-grandchildren, Nichola Harris, Adrian Feutz and Effe Stremming; two sisters, Wilhelmine Blackwell of Odon and Senora (Glen) Roark of Wheatland.


Orvel was preceded in death by: his parents; one son, Mearl E. Stremming; one brother, Roy Stremming; two sisters, a baby sister and Ruth Roark.


Funeral Services are scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, February 8th, 2016 at Parkview Christian Church, located at 12 2nd St., Plainville, Indiana, with Preacher Alfred Helms officiating. Orvel will be laid to rest in Stafford Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be provided by the American Legion Post #22.


Family and friends may call from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Sunday, February 7th at the Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel in Linton and from 11:00 AM until the time of service at 1:00 PM on Monday at the church. An Eastern Star Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 PM on Sunday at the funeral home followed by a Masonic Memorial Service.


Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkview Christian Church in memory of Orvel. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and the church.
