Robert D. Smedley, 87, of Sullivan, IN passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at the Sullivan County Community Hospital. He was born in Sullivan County on February 25, 1926 to William Dale and Chloe (Richards) Smedley. He married Laura Elizabeth (Dugan), who preceded him in death in 2003. Bob later married Carolyn F. (Jewell) who survives.
Robert was a supervisor at the Crane Navel Ammunition Depot with 30 years of service until his retirement in December of 1982. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II and was a member of the Sullivan American Legion Post #139. Bob loved basketball,spending time with his constant companion, Pearl, his Chihuahua and auto racing; he had attended the Indianapolis 500 over fifty times throughout his life.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Smedley of Chrisman, IL; daughter, Pam Haynes of Linton; two step-daughters, Stephanie (Dan) Toller of Mesa, AZ and Melinda Evans of Martinsville; one step-son, Donald (Susan) Morecraft of Robinson, IL; four grandchildren, Michael Gadberry, Darla (Brian) Chesnut, David Gadberry and Bart Haynes; five step-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; six step-great grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, William Eugene Smedley.
The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to S.A.F.E. (Saving Animals from Everywhere) located in Linton. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Friends may call at the Anderson-Poindexter Dugger Chapel from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 6, 2013.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at the Anderson-Poindexter Dugger Chapel at 2:00 PM with Pastor Jeff Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Dugger, IN with full Military Graveside Rites being presented by the American Legion.
