Obituary

Virgil R. Smith, 87, of Linton passed away Thursday, October 30, 2008 at his residence. He was born on July 15, 1921, in Linton, Indiana, to Charles and Lyndia (Owens) Smith. On December 1, 1950, he married Martha Alderson and they had two daughters. Martha passed away on April 19, 1992. He later married Dolores Rader on October 5, 1994.

Virgil served in the US Army during WWII and received four Bronze Stars. He was a baker for Padgett's Bakery, retiring in 1985. He was a member of American Legion Post #22 and VFW Post #7118.

Survivors include his wife Dolores; two daughters, Nancy Rentas of Linton and Cathy Duviver of St. Cloud, FL; one step-son, Michael Goodman of Linton and one step-daughter, Connie Girten of Indianapolis. Also surviving are two sisters, Sarah Wilkinson of Linton and Maxine Lawson of Memphis, TN.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Martha, two infant brothers and two brothers, William E. Smith and Charles 'Chuck' Smith.

Friends may call at Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Sunday, November 2, 2008, and from 9:00 AM until the hour of service on Monday. The funeral service will begin at 1:30 PM on Monday, November 3, 2008, at Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel with Warren Shake officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Linton, IN, with Military Graveside Rites given by American Legion Post #22.
