Clyde Metz Obituary

Clyde Raymond Metz, 83, of St. Augustine, Florida, died of natural causes on May 6, 2023. He was born in Gary, Indiana on May 3, 1940 to Robert and Josephine (Knight) Metz. He lived his childhood years in Hobart, Indiana, where he met his future wife Jennie Ann (Speer) Metz in junior high. They married in April 1961.

Clyde graduated from Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in 1962. He then went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy degree in physical chemistry from Indiana University. Clyde taught Chemistry at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis until 1982. He then joined the faculty of the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC. He was a coauthor of a general chemistry textbook and related laboratory materials, solution manuals, and study guides and has published several student research papers. He was active in the Division of Chemical Education of the American Chemical Society, was a member of the Electrochemical Society, Alpha Chi Sigma, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi Phi Lambda Upsilon and the South Carolina Academy of Science. He was a fellow of the Indiana Academy of science. Clyde loved being an active volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America in Indianapolis and Charleston. He served as a scoutmaster for many years in Indianapolis and was awarded the Silver Beaver award by the Coastal Carolina Council in Charleston. 

Clyde was a member of the United Methodist Church. He spent the last years of his life surrounded by loving family in St. Augustine, Florida.

Family left to cherish the memory of Clyde include his wife, Jennie Ann Speer Metz; his children, Curtis (Sharon) Metz and Shelley (Timmothy); his grandchildren, Alexis, Cameron, Sydney and Claire; his brother and sister-in-law, Philip and Marcia Speer and their children, Kathryn and Kevin (Kimberly) and their children, Stephanie, Eric and Cole.

Clyde was preceded in death by his daughter, Lianne Debra Metz. 

Services to honor the life of Clyde will be private. He will be laid to rest in Sandborn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Boy Scouts of America.
