Richard O'Brien Obituary

Richard L. O’Brien, 80, of Brownsburg, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at his residence. He was born in Ohio, on March 20, 1937 to Otho L. ‘Toby’ and Ruth B. (Stull) O’Brien. Arriving in Indiana at a young age, he grew up in Sandborn, IN.  As a teenager,  he worked in the family grocery store and graduated from  Linton High School.

Richard then attended IU and received his Master's degree in Education. Following his studies he moved to Indianapolis and began a long career with  Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) where beyond his primary role teaching science,  he taught night classes and drivers' education as well as being a Guidance Counselor to students.

It was in Indianapolis that he met Ann Piper . They were married in 1960 and had two children, Mark and Kurt. He enjoyed golf, boating, watching his favorite sport teams,  and above all spending time with his family.

On  February 14, 1986 Richard married his loving wife, Brooke H. (Meeder) Feister.

In 1995 Richard retired from IPS after 34 years of service. Upon his retirement he and Brooke moved to Red Lodge, MT. Over the next 22 years he enjoyed the great outdoors and traveled to diverse locations on 5 continents from Alaska to England to Africa to Australia to Chile and points in between.

In 2017 Richard and Brooke moved back to Indiana to be closer to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchild. He thoroughly enjoyed regularly seeing them and was grateful for the time they had together.

Richard was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, Retired Teachers Association and the IU Alumni club.

Survivors include: his wife, Brooke Feister of Brownsburg; two sons, Mark (Cindy) O’Brien of Whitestown and Kurt (Jessica) O’Brien of Windermere, FL; seven grandchildren, Greg (Audra), Derek (Amanda), Austin, CJ, Colby, Noah and Cooper; one great-grandson, Owen; one sister, Karen Griffin of Wichita Falls, TX.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside services are scheduled for 1:00 PM on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Fairview Cemetery in Linton with Executive Pastor James O’ Bold officiating.

Family and friends may call from 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM on Thursday at Anderson-Poindexter Funeral Home in Linton.

Following the services in Linton, a Celebration of Life gathering will be held at Green Street Pub at 911 N. Green St. in Brownsburg, IN from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to Yellowstone Forever Fund at yellowstone.org or teacherstreasures.org. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
