Vernon Hugh Bowman, 86, of Sandborn, Indiana, passed from this life on
Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was
born on May 28, 1937, in Vincennes to Stewart and Khiva (Keller) Bowman.
Hugh graduated from Sandborn High School in 1955. After graduation he received a
bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Purdue University and served two years in the
US Army before returning home to Sandborn to help farm with the family.
Hugh dabbled in real estate and held an auctioneer license at one time in his life.
He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed bird hunting and his dogs. He loved the
game of basketball and could be seen attending the local school games. He referred
to himself as a student of the game, always watching and learning.
He spent many days visiting the Blue Jay Junction in Sandborn playing euchre,
checkers and working crossword puzzles. If he wasn’t in the field, you could look for
him there or at the Westphalia Diner.
He was always ready for a great debate and encouraged others to have a thirst for
knowledge. His heart remained in farming, he loved the land, the crops, and his
farming community.
The family left to cherish the memory of Hugh include one niece, Rebecca (Andy)
Michael of Avon and one nephew, Stewart (Kandice) Berg of Sandborn.
Hugh was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sharon Berg.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 PM on Monday, May 13, 2024 at Sandborn Cemetery with Bryan Sanders officiating.
Arrangements and care have been entrusted to Meng Family Funeral
Homes, Anderson-Poindexter Chapel in Linton. Condolences and memories may be
